I stole something today?
I stole a few bottles of wine from work today. I don’t know why i did it. I have never really stolen before. I quess I felt justified because my boss does treat me like crap. I never would have considered it, but he accused me of stealing last week, which was total bullshit. He accused me in front of everyone. Nobody really believed him, but I still felt bad. I quit, but I stayed for an extra week to allow them to find someone to replace me. I know I’m just making excuses. As I was leaving, I grabbed three bottles, the wholesale price (what the resturant I work for pays) is probably about $30-35. On my way out, my boss stopped and asked to look in my bag. I said no. He went crazy and said he knew I had liquor in there. I told him I didn’t and walked out. He freaked out. I feel really bad know and would like to return them. If I go back and admit I stole them and return them, can he prosecute me? As of now, he has no proof. I feel really bad.
It’s good that you are feeling guilty…that is your conscience talking to you, because you know you were wrong. Even if he treated you badly, you were not justified in stealing from him.
I hope you learned something from this experience…there is no way you will be able to get a reference from a man who thinks you a thief, even if you did help out by staying on until a replacement was found…
You are a good person who made a bad choice–learn from it, and do not steal again. The right thing to do is to take it back an apologize, but you will have to decide whether you can do that or not.
BTW, I am shocked at the number of people who seem to think it is OK to steal from your boss–whether one steals wine, cash or shoes, one is still a common thief…and STEALING IS WRONG!!!
It’s not the actual act that is so bad as it is the attitude that it is perfectly OK…I think YOU learned your lesson, but some of those trying to give you advice are the ones I am worried about.
